There seems to be an air of resignation in the comments above that, after all that, it has become fait accompli that the Election Commission is anti-Election, and that there is hardly likely to be an Election!

I didn't for once think that either the CTG or the Army had ever had any intentions of public good in their minds or the betterment of Bangladesh. I did though offer them the benefit of doubt in the initial months they were at the least trying to cleanse the roots of corruption. That notion too has gone out of the window by the circulating rumours that the Army/CTG and their cohorts are neck deep in even hyperbolic and dastardly corruption!

The EC, CEC and the Commissioners by historical antecedents had nary a thought about holding of the Elections to put Bangladesh once again on the road to Democracy. They have whiled away time and money to perpetuate the powers that be to wield the sword and baton of misrule and mis-governance. The proofs and evidences are there for all to see by now. BANGLADESH IS IN A SORDID MESS, supine for capitulation to BUG BROTHER. That was the original scheme.

yeah I agree, and I don't like Sheikh Hasina's ultimatum that the AL should not participate in elections without her. This is exactly the kind of attitude that has gotten us here in the first place. What is more important democracy or Hasina's ego? Has anyone mentioned the possibility of graceful retirement to her? What is more important AL the party or Hasina? The AL should definitely call for her fair trial but the election itself cannot be the bargaining chip, free Hasina or jalao porao, nirbachon banchal? I am not willing to sacrifice return to democracy for Hasina or Khaleda or any politician/group thereof. Why can't the AL participate in elections full blast, win, and then give Hasina a "fair trial"? Ever thought of that strategy Zillur Rahman? I would think the parties could come to some kind of understanding on this issue of fair trials or even release of all political party leaders upon winning office (does that put Bangladesh back to square one? It's a point worth debating). At the very least, this is a very unique opportunity to reform these parties and for new leadership to come up and lead the party to electoral victory sidelining the hapless duo, Hasina the loose cannon and Khaleda the corruption enabler. No matter what, it will be useful and salutary for these parties and Bangaldeshis to realize that Khaleda and Hasina are not indispensable to democratic government. That said, you have to admit though, the EC's treatment of BNP has been laughably unfair and biased.

they have a difficult job as the parties are behaving like babies who still want a turn on the playground roundabout having destroyed it with their dirty, vindictive and evil ways for far too long.

I dont think waiting for the leaderships to retire from natural causes is in the public interest. somebody needs to expand the horizons of possibility and make another way possible.
